Gates, Anderson remained tied for lead in Athens

04/30/2010 - Athens, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Bobby Gates and Mark Anderson carded two-under 69s Friday to remain tied for the lead at the halfway point of the Stadion Athens Classic.

Gates and Anderson, who shared the first-round lead with Bradley Iles, are tied atop the leaderboard with Daniel Summerhays (68) after two rounds. They completed 36 holes at seven-under-par 135.

Michael Putnam (69) and J.J. Killeen (67) are tied for fourth at minus-six. Iles managed an even-par 71 and slid into a share of sixth place at five- under-par 137.

Gates played the back nine first on Friday and struggled out of the gates. He faltered to bogeys on 10 and 13 to slide to minus-three.

The Nationwide Tour's leading money winner fought back with consecutive birdies from the 14th at the University of Georgia Country Club.

Gates moved to six-under with a birdie on the par-five 17th. Around the turn, he posted eight pars and a lone birdie at the fifth.

"I knew putting would be critical this week," Gates said. "The greens are so fast, you cannot be aggressive on these putts. I'm really trying to die my putts into the hole."

Anderson traded a bogey for a birdie from the first. He played steady golf with birdies on six and 13. A birdie on the 17th gave him the lead at eight- under, but he bogeyed the last to slide into a share of the lead.

"I was driving on both sides of the golf course. I didn't have just one miss, so it was tough to play," said Anderson, who hit just four of 14 fairways. "I missed a lot of birdie putts inside of 10 feet."

Summerhays, who won the 2007 Children's Hospital Invitational as an amateur, bogeyed the 11th to open his round, but came back with a birdie on 12.

He poured in three straight birdies from the 16th to make the turn at minus- seven. Summerhays stumbled to a bogey on the fourth, but atoned for that error with a birdie on the par-five seventh to gain a share of the 36-hole lead.

"There aren't too many shots that I left out there, let's just say that," Summerhays admitted. "I honestly felt like I played better today than I did yesterday, but I think the course is playing tougher this afternoon than it did yesterday."

NOTES: Defending champion Patrick Sheehan posted a three-under 68 to jump from a share of 60th into a tie for 19th at minus-two...The cut line fell at one- over-par 143 with 69 players moving on to the weekend...Bad weather is expected on Saturday so tee times were moved up with players in threesomes off the first and 10th tees.
